Safari Float Trip on the Peñas Blancas River

Expedition to Chato Hill
The journey begins by
transferring us from La Fortuna around the Arenal Volcano to get to the hotel "Observatory Lodge," there we start the hike toward the summit of Chato Hill through a very dense primary forest. When we arrived up there, we go to visit the lagoon on the top where you can swim, take photos and discover the surroundings. Then, we continue descending, always enclosed of a very dense forest where you are able to appreciate the birds, plants, animals, insects and immense trees as well as enjoy the sensation of liberty having a beautiful view of the San Carlos Valley and the Arenal Volcano. The end of the walk will be in La Fortuna Waterfall where we will descend again in order to arrive at the base of it and enjoy a beautiful natural landscape that makes it very special. After a refreshing swim we will return to La Fortuna town by car.

The Children Rain Forest
First day: We depart at 7: 00 a.m. from La Fortuna to La Tigra, about 15 k.m. There we change the car to a Four wheel drive to go up 10 k.m. more to the Pocosol Biological Station.

We meet the park rangers and they give us a small talk about the history of the park. Then we take a hike to a trail called Catarata Velo de Novia of approximately 2 hours and experience the virgin primary rain forest.

In the afternoon walk on a trail La Zamia for two and half hours to enjoy the volcanic activity. Its just the moment to take a swim in the natural lake! After dinner we go out and experience the nocturnal activity of reptiles, amphibians and insects.

Second day:

Optional bird walk at 5:30 a.m. Breakfast at 7:00 a.m. and we return to Fortuna.

Night Walk
The night walk takes place at the Ecocentro Danaus a small reserve whose focus is conservation and education. A visit to the center at night will afford you the opportunity to see some of the areas more prominent nocturnal animals in action such as sloths, caimans, spiders, frogs, bats, butterflies and birds and also the way these species interact with each other and the center’s vegetation.

Hiking to Celeste River
We leave at 7:00 a.m. from La Fortuna. After a typical breakfast in route to Rio Celeste, we’ll arrive at the Tenorio Volcano National Park were we’ll begin our 7 k.m hike (approximately 4 hours) through the tropical rain forest. We’ll arrive Los Teñíderos of the Rio Celeste, the site where two streams of crystalline water come together and form the heavenly color blue that gives the river its name. We’ll return through trails rich with ecological wonders that lead us to the "OLLAS" -- openings in the earth where we can excavate healing muds, take a mud bath, and a dip in the natural hot springs all while observing the attractions of Tenorio Volcano.

We’ll continue our hike through the jungle to seek out the volcano’s furnace vents that expel gases of extreme high temperatures. On our decent we will get to see the spectacular Rio Celeste waterfall whose color makes it one of a kind. Our final reward is an exquisite lunch at the end of our journey.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge
The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is considered one of the richest sites in the continent for the observation of birds. Beside an abundance of birds, Caño Negro is also refuge of many other animals like sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, and a variety of native flora of the wet land.

Our tour to this beautiful region leaves from La Fortuna, driving for about an hour and a half until Los Chiles, which is a rustic town that meets to only five kilometers of the border of Nicaragua, it is here where we take the boat down to Río Frío for about three hours.

From the beginning of the trip, our professional guide will explain each one of the plantations that we will see on the way as well as the flora and fauna of the region.

Also you will see spiders and bats which are frequent in this place.

Combination Tour with Hanging Bridges
This tour begins at 7:30 a.m. with a visit to the Hanging Bridges of Arenal, a hiking trip through the tropical humid forest of 3 kilometers passing 15 bridges from 5 to 100 meters long and up to 60 meters high and other spectacular scenery such as birds, reptiles, mammals and insects. Our next stop is La Fortuna Waterfall.

This waterfall has a huge swimming hole with large rocks nearby...perfect for a rest after a vigorating swim. Then we drive back to town to have lunch at "Lava Rocks" Restaurant.

About 3:00 p.m. we start the tour to the volcano. It is a hiking trip through the tropical humid forest for about 45 minutes to get to the lava flow from 1992. You will see a great variety of plants, wildlife, the magnificence of Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake. Watch the sunset as we await darkness to see and hear the glowing rocks of lava tumbling down the side of the mountain. Is a sight not to be missed.

A full active day ! Now, put on your bathing suit again to relax in the thermal waters of Tabacón Resort for a few hours and have dinner there.

Combination Tour with Ecocentro Danaus

his tour begins at 8:00 a. m. and is a new alternative for visitors looking for a different natural experience to see the Fortuna area...a combination created for nature lovers.

At Danaus Eco-Center, our first stop, you will enjoy and learn about the natural history of butterflies of Costa Rica, like Blue Morfho, Monarch, Owl butterfly, Swallow tail and many more. You will also see a great variety of tropical plants and traditional crops organically farmed in the gardens.

Our next stop is in La Fortuna Waterfall. This waterfall has a huge swimming hole with large rocks nearby...perfect for a rest after and vigorating swim. Then we drive back to town to have lunch at "Lava Rocks" Restaurant.

Horseback Riding to La Fortuna Waterfall
This is a good combination of horseback ride and hike and a beautiful stage. These are trained horses that will take you to the entrance of the waterfall through pastures, forest and tall hills. The views of the Valley of San Carlos and the tropical forest that enclose it are spectacular.

At the end of the road, we will leave the horses and we will descend walking on a natural trail to the base of the waterfall.

This fantastic area is very quiet and special to relax and swim for a while.

Horseback Riding to Monteverde
We leave from La Fortuna early in the morning to the Arenal Dam. A motorboat takes us to the other side of the Arenal Lake to El Castillo, a town where the horses will be ready for us. We ride for three and a half hours, crossing rivers, grasslands and forests. We will climb up over 3300 feet (1 km.) until we reach the cloud forest. This is probably the most spectacular trip you will find in Costa Rica - traveling by horseback on the old trade route used by locals for decades!

On our horseback tour, traveling to or from Monteverde, you experience some of the worst pothole filled roads in the country. In addition, it gives you the opportunity to see some of the most stunning scenery in the world as you ride nearby the Children's Rainforest” Reserve and the Monteverde Cloud Forest! Early Bird Walk Afternoon Cook Down
Birds are most active early in the morning and become active again as the day cools into evening. Join us for one or both of these walks in the La Fortuna area or near your hotel, for an amazing display of tropical birds. You are likely to see toucans, parrots, oropendolas, colorful tanagers and parakeets. For the more experienced birdwatcher, we can focus on seeing, Royal Flycatchers, White-fronted Nunbirds, Cinnamon Woodpeckers and other less commonly seen species. We will tailor the tour for you. "Early Bird Walks" includes coffee and a fruit snack. We will wrap up both by listing and discussing the birds we have seen. This makes it very special. After a refreshing swim we will return to La Fortuna town by car.

Kayak Tour on Lake Arenal

Due to the beauty of the landscapes and lush vegetation, Arenal Lake surrounding areas have become an excellent spot for boat rides. In this two hours boat ride you will have the opportunity to see a huge variety of birds such as Flycatchers, kingfishers, Anhinga and mammals such as monkeys, coatis and sloth's.

Dentrobates Wild Life Reserve
This tour takes place in the Dendrobates Reserve, which contains 300 hectares of primary and secondary tropical rainforest and is connected to the Arenal Conservation area.   It is managed by the Zona Fluca Development Association whose main objective is the protection of the reserve's flora and fauna.   The abundance of the Dendrobates Pumilio , also known as the "blue jeans" frog or "poison dart" frog gives the reserve its name.   There are also many species of birds in the reserve and the opportunity to see monkeys, snakes and other reptiles.   Your guide will also show you many different plants including a giant Kapok tree and will also explain their roles in the rainforest.
