Baby Turtle
Hatching
 |
Eventually the last of about a hundred baby
turtles swam out into the Caribbean. When they
left the land they became part of the food chain
in the sea. Their odds aren’t good there. It is
Nature’s way. It has been estimated that one in
five hundred survive to adulthood. I like to
think that some day a few of the babies I helped
may return to the beach at Turtle Beach Lodge to
lay their own eggs.
Turtles are said to return to the beach where
they were born. It is my understanding that the
largest threat to turtles and their eggs is from
poachers. The turtles are killed for their meat.
The eggs are dug up and sold as aphrodisiacs in
the local bars and other places. It is illegal,
but far too many eggs are taken every year for
this activity. Part of the plan behind
Eco-Tourism is to provide employment, and
therefore income, for Costa Rican citizens
through tourism. |
